SPRAT Certification Info

The following information is provided to help you understand the general requirements for the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians (SPRAT) certification. Additional information can be found in greater detail in the current SPRAT Certification Requirements for Rope Access Work. We also recommend reviewing the Physical Requirements prior to registering for a training course.

• No prior experience necessary.

• Complete a Level I written test.

SPRAT Certification Renewal
• SPRAT certificates are valid for three years.
• A four-day training course is recommended for revalidating candidates prior to the evaluation.
• Candidates who can show proof of annual refresher training and/or consistent work on a two-rope system may qualify for an accelerated training course.
• If re-training and successful evaluation are completed in the 6 month period prior to the expiry of a current certificate, a new certificate will be issued with an expiry date 3 years from the expiry date of the previous certificate.

Unsuccessful SPRAT Evaluation
A candidate who fails the Field Evaluation must wait at least seven (7) days before retesting. The candidate is not required to retake a successfully completed written test if the field evaluation is conducted within sixty (60) days of the original evaluation session.

A candidate who fails the written test but passes the field evaluation can retake the written test between seven (7) and sixty (60) days from the date of the evaluation without being required to retake the Field Examination.

Expired SPRAT Certification
It is important to note that any rope access hours acquired without a valid certification will not be counted toward the minimum required hours for certification advancement.
Candidates with expired certifications wishing to re-certify or advance to the next level will have to demonstrate and complete all skills required at the proposed level of certification on their evaluation.

Refresher Training (6 or More Months Not On Rope)

SPRAT recommends technicians who have not undertaken rope access work for a period of more than six months to undergo refresher training. Please contact us with your specific situation details, including your level of certification, time certified at current level, and length of time off rope.
